Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). El Paso Water Utilities (El Paso, Texas) has broken ground on the worlds largest inland water desalination plant in El Paso, Texas, near the Fort Bliss Military Reserve. Plans call for the creation of a plant that will convert brackish water into fresh water at a rate of 27.5 million gallons per day, utilizing a reverse osmosis process that removes salts and other contaminates through high-pressure filtration.
Dirt work and underground piping installation activities are underway and the wells are being drilled that will extract the brackish from its source. The surface facilities are currently being redesigned from stainless steel to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) for cost savings and construction on those portions of the plant are a few months away. Once the plant comes on-line, the facilities will increase fresh water supply in the area by 25%, meaning more than 160,000 households, 10,000 businesses and 18,000 troops and their families will receive water from the plant.
El Paso Water Utilities was established May 22, 1952 by City Ordinance No. 752 to completely manage and operate the water and wastewater system for the City of El Paso. The five-member board of trustees, which makes up the Public Service Board, consists of the Mayor of the City of El Paso and four residents of El Paso County, Texas.
