Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Unit 2 of Spain's 2,055-megawatt (MW) Asco Nuclear Power Plant remains offline 63 days after beginning a refueling outage. The unit went offline November 12, 2011, for its 20th refueling outage, and reconnection to the grid is expected to take place on January 13, plant officials told Industrial Info.

The facility is located in Catalonia, in the village of Asco, on the Ebro River. The facility is equipped with two Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) steam generators with capacities of 1,028 MW and 1,027 MW, respectively, and a pressurized water reactor manufactured by Westinghouse LLC (Monroeville, Pennsylvania).

The nuclear power plant is operated by ANAV, a corporate group formed by Endesa SA (MCE:ELE) (Madrid, Spain) (85%) and Iberdrola SA (PINK:IBDRY) (Bilbao, Spain) (15%). Unit 1 began operating in December 1984, and Unit 2 followed in March 1986.

At the moment, Spain's eight nuclear reactors generate 20% of the country's power. The Asco plant was recently cleared by the Spanish Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) to operate until 2021.
