Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Montes del Plata (Punta Pereira, Uruguay), a company dedicated to the production and commercialization of pulp, continues with its project to build the most modern pulp mill in Uruguay. By the end of the year, it is expected to have completed 80%. The estimated cost of the project is $1.96 million. The plant will produce 1.3 millon tonnes per year of pulp, and it is expected to be operational during the second half of 2013.

The project is focuced on the construction of a plant that will use the best technology for the manufacturing of pulp. The facility also will be equipped with a biomass power-generating unit, in which energy will be used for the plant's internal consumption.

Currently, equipment that arrived from Europe is being installed. The plant has six areas, three of which are already installed; the rest are in the process of being installed. They also are working on some roads that are to be finished by the end of this year. Another important part of the project is the port, which will have two loading bays and will provide the logistic services to the mill (entering raw material for the production process, for example). One will be used for bringing the wood, and the other for oceanic vessels.

There are two main companies that have been awarded contracts for this project. Honeywell do Brasil Limited (Sao Paulo, Brasil) is the technology provider for major equipment in the pulp mill. ABB Uruguay (Montevideo, Uruguay) is a supplier of equipment, such as the power boiler and other machines for the biomass power unit.

The plant under construction is located in Punta Pereira, in the Department of Colonia, which is in southwestern Uruguay. The production capacity will be 1.3 million tones, and more than 4,500 people are working in the plant (half Finnish and half Uruguayan).

The Chilean company Arauco and the Swedish-Finnish Stora Enso bought the project from Spanish firm Encein October 2009. They formed a joint venture called Montes del Plata. Now, the company is developing a sustainable forest base that can provide the necessary raw material to supply the industrial plant, producing pulp that is being built.
