U.S. Battery Manufacturing Industry Continues Growth

According to Freedonia Group, the United States' lithium-ion battery demand will grow 4.2% through 2017.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Lithium-ion battery demand in the United States will grow 4.2% through 2017, according to Freedonia Group. The increased battery demand results from increased orders for hybrid-electrical motor vehicles, durable goods and backup power supplies. Consumer demand for portable computers and cell phones has the fastest growth due to increased popularity of the portable and medical device markets. Industrial Info is tracking seven lithium-ion battery projects totaling $5.35 billion in the United States.

In Michigan, the Romulus lithium-ion battery powder and coating manufacturing plant expansion is installing new battery cell assembly equipment. Construction began summer of 2016 and is anticipated for completion in spring of 2017. The $100 million Livonia lithium ion battery manufacturing plant expansion also entails installing new battery cell assembly equipment. Construction is anticipated to begin early 2017 and is anticipated for completion in early 2018.

In Arkansas, the $30.7 million Fort Smith industrial battery manufacturing plant expansion entails renovating the existing 224,000-square-foot facility and constructing a 12,000-square-foot building expansion, as well as relocating the boiler room. Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2017 and is anticipated for completion in summer of 2021.

In Delaware, the $43 million Middletown automotive battery manufacturing plant expansion consists of constructing a 75,000-square-foot building and installing three additional cast-on strap process lines with heat seal machines, eight curing ovens and a central vacuum system. Construction is anticipated to begin early 2017 and anticipated for completion in fall of 2017.

In Iowa, a grassroot, $68 million battery finishing plant is being constructed in Oelwein. The project consists of constructing a 318,600-square-foot facility. Construction began in summer of 2016 and is anticipated for completion in summer of 2018.

In Georgia, the Lagrange battery manufacturing plant is performing a $1.5 million equipment addition, which includes installing additional battery assembly equipment. Construction is anticipated to begin in fall of 2018 and anticipated for completion in the summer of 2019.

In Nevada, the McCarran grassroot lithium-ion battery "Gigafactory" manufacturing plant project entails constructing a $5 billion, 1-2 level, 5.8 million-square-foot lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant. Construction began in summer of 2014 and is anticipated for completion in early 2020.
