Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking $3.55 billion in Chemical Processing projects that are set to begin construction this year the U.S. Northeast, which includes the states of Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Delaware. Dominated by a large ethylene plant project, many of the capital projects in the region will make use of ethane from shale gas producers in the Marcellus and Utica basins.

Shell Chemical Company, part of Royal Dutch Shell plc (NYSE:RDS.A) (The Hague, Netherlands), made a final investment decision last year to build a major petrochemical complex, comprising an ethylene cracker with a polyethylene derivatives unit, to be located in Monaca, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Structural construction of the 1.5 million-metric-ton-per-year ethylene cracker is currently expected to kick off in the third quarter of this year, with completion in second-quarter 2020. Up to 6,000 construction workers will be involved in building the facility, which will have 600 permanent employees when completed, according to Shell.

Also in Pennsylvania, Braskem America Incorporated, part of Brazil-based Braskem (NYSE:BAK) (Sao Paulo), is planning capital upgrades for its 800 million-pound-per-year polypropylene plant in Marcus Hook. The project includes rebuilds and replacements of compressors, pumps and process piping. Scheduled for construction kickoff in July, the upgrades project is expected to be completed by the end of the year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In Birdsboro, Pennsylvania, Arkema Incorporated, part of the Arkema Group (Colombes, France) is expanding its thermoplastics elastomers plant. Capacity at the facility will increase by 4,000 tons per year. For more on the project, see Industrial Info's project report.
