Sabal Trail Natural Gas Pipeline Phase I Begins Service

Phase 1 of the Sabal Trail Pipeline is beginning operations.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Phase I of the 515-mile Sabal Trail natural gas pipeline, which runs through Alabama, Georgia and Florida, is expected to be fully in service by the end of June. The $3.2 billion project will move gas from Tallapoosa County, Alabama, to Osceola County, Florida, supplying Florida Power and Light (Juno Beach) and Duke Energy Florida LLC, which is part of Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina). Natural gas has already begun to move mainline facilities in Florida, according to news media accounts.

The pipeline was developed by a joint venture of Spectra Energy Partners (now part of Enbridge Incorporated (NYSE:ENB) (Calgary, Alberta)), NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach) and Duke Energy. Industrial Info is tracking 12 active projects related to Sabal Trail. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) granted permission on June 9 for Phase I facilities to begin service. This includes 482.4 miles of mainline between the northern interconnect in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, and the southern interconnect in Osceola County, Florida, along with the corresponding compressor stations, as well as meter and regulator stations. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Alabama, Georgia and Florida (spreads 4 and 5 and spreads 6 and 7) segments of the pipeline.

Phase I of Sabal Trail is designed to have a flow capacity of 810 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d), but as only two of five compressor stations are operating, the maximum capacity is currently 460 MMcf/d, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Associated projects include the Hillabee Phase 1 project, which will expand Williams Companies Incorporated's (NYSE:WMB) (Tulsa, Oklahoma) Transco pipeline capacity in Alabama; and NextEra's Florida Power & Light (FP&L) Southeast Connection pipeline. Ultimately, the pipeline will be able to move more than 1 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d), according to the developers. For more information on the Hillabee Expansion, see Industrial Info's project reports. Also, see Industrial Info's project reports for the FP&L Southeast Connection pipeline.

In addition to providing natural gas for Florida Power and Light, the pipeline will supply the Duke Energy's new $1.5 billion natural gas-fired, combined-cycle power plant in Citrus County, Florida. The plant's first 820 megawatts are expected to come online in mid-2018, and the second 820 megawatts are expected to come online by December 2018. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Industrial Info is tracking $7.69 billion of active projects involving Duke Energy. For related information, see May 10, 2017, article - Duke Makes Headway with Natural Gas Power, Pipeline Projects.
