Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Duke Energy held a grand opening ceremony last week for its 1,640-megawatt (MW) Citrus combined-cycle power station in Citrus County, Florida. Located in Duke's Crystal River Energy Complex, the $1.5 billion station started producing power for customers in late 2018.

Industrial Info is tracking a wealth of power generation projects in various stages of development in Florida, amounting to more than $14.5 billion in potential investments. Click here to see all of the active Florida power generation projects.

The Citrus station has two power blocks, four combustion turbine generators and two steam turbine generators, according to Duke. Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas) was providing turn-key services, and Blaine Construction Corporation (Knoxville, Tennessee) was the structural contractor. For more information on the Citrus combined-cycle power station, see Industrial Info's project report.

The station gets its natural gas via the 515-mile Sabal Trail pipeline, of which Duke is a 7.5% owner. The $3.2 billion pipeline starts in Alabama, extends through Georgia and ends in Central Florida. For more information on the pipeline, see June 26, 2017, article - Sabal Trail Natural Gas Pipeline Phase I Begins Service.

During the station's grand opening, Duke Chief Executive Officer Lynn Good touted the project as an example of the "cleaner, smarter energy future we're creating for our customers." The company noted that combined-cycle natural gas units generate energy more efficiently and have significantly lower emissions than coal-fired units.

The Crystal River Energy Complex also has two operational coal-fired plants. In all, the complex can generate more than 3,000 MW. A decommissioning nuclear power plant also is located in the complex. For more on the nuclear plant decommissioning, see Industrial Info's project report.

The combined-cycle power project is in line with what is going on throughout the rest of the U.S. In its March Short-Term Energy Outlook, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said it now expects electricity generation fueled by natural gas will grow by 2% in 2019, in contrast to a forecast of minimal growth in natural gas generation for 2019 in February's energy outlook. The EIA said it now expects coal-fired generation this year to fall by 12%, compared with a forecast 2019 decline of 8% in the February outlook.

"These changes in the forecast are driven primarily by new natural gas-fired generating capacity coming online sooner than expected," the EIA said.

In Florida, more than $8.5 billion of the power generation projects being tracked by Industrial Info involve natural gas as the fuel source. In Okeechobee, construction continues on NextEra Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) $1.2 billion combined-cycle Clean Energy Center. The grassroot 3-on-1 natural gas and fuel oil-fired combined cycle power plant will generate 1,600 MW upon its planned completion in the third quarter this year. Zachry Industrial Service Group (San Antonio, Texas) is providing engineering, construction and procurement. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report, and January 28, 2019, article - NextEra Energy Progresses with Renewables, Natural Gas-fired Buildout.

Industrial Info also is tracking $1.4 billion in solar project activity in the Sunshine State. Among the projects is Duke's planned 74.9-MW solar farm in Trenton. Scheduled to kick off construction in the fourth quarter this year, the facility will utilize 280,000 photovoltaic tracking solar panels. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
