Nuclear Reactor Head Replacement Scheduled for Fall at Great Lakes Region Power Plant

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The 535 megawatt nuclear unit at the Kewaunee Nuclear Power Station is scheduled to have its reactor head vessel replaced in October of this year. The nuclear power plant, located along Lake Michigan, nine miles south of Kewaunee, Wisconsin, consists of a Westinghouse turbine generator set and a Westinghouse pressurized-water reactor (PWR). The unit began commercial operation in 1974 and has a license that expires in 2013.

The reactor vessel head will be replaced during the power station's regular refueling maintenance outage. Replacement of the vessel head is one of the best choices to ensure the operational reliability of the plant.

Westinghouse Electric Company (Monroeville, Pennsylvania) is contracted to do the installation and containment for the project. The Westinghouse Electric Company provides technology, plant design, and equipment to utility and industrial customers in the nuclear industry.

The Kewaunee Nuclear Plant is owned by the Wisconsin Public Service (59%) and Wisconsin Power & Light (41%), and is being operated by Nuclear Management Company LLC.

Wisconsin Public Service Corporation, a subsidiary of WPS Resources Corporation (NYSE: WPS) (Green Bay, Wisconsin), is a regulated electric utility serving the northeastern and central Wisconsin and upper Michigan.

Wisconsin Power & Light (WP & L), a subsidiary of Alliant Energy Corporation (NYSE:LNT) (Madison, Wisconsin), provides electricity to 430,000 customers in the area, and more than 2,000 megawatts of generating capacity in nuclear, fossil-fueled, and hydroelectric plants.

Nuclear Management Company LLC (Hudson, Wisconsin) is a leader in the nuclear generation industry. It operates six nuclear plants: Monticello Nuclear Generating Station, Prairie Island Nuclear Station, Kewaunee Nuclear Power Station, Point Beach Nuclear Plant, Duane Arnold Nuclear Energy Center, and Palisades Nuclear Plant.
