Summary

ABB continued to see a strong market for its mining and industrial services in third-quarter 2026, with its order backlog indicating consistent demand from some of the busiest markets in the U.S. and Canada.

Atop Canada's Mining Market

While ABB Limited is contracted to provide engineering and construction services to some of Canada's most high-profile mining projects, it is developing its own U.S.-based projects that will cater to some of the fastest-growing industrial sectors. Industrial Info Resources is tracking more than US$14 billion worth of active and proposed projects in the U.S. and Canada with ABB as a contractor, about US$13 billion of which is attributed to a major mining project in Saskatchewan.

According to Industrial Info Resources data, BHP Group Limited's Jansen Potash Mine & Mill in Leroy, Saskatchewan, is the largest project in North America to feature ABB's services. BHP recently said Phase I of the project, which is expected to produce 4.15 million tons per year, is 87% complete. Industrial Info Resources estimates the project will be completed in the second half of 2027.

Phase II of the Jansen project, which is expected to roughly double production, currently is estimated to begin production toward the end of 2031. ABB has been contracted to deliver, install and commission friction hoists and related electrical systems for both phases. Industrial Info Resources offers more information on the Jansen development in its Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Metals & Minerals Plant and Project databases, where readers can find details--including construction schedules, investment values and necessary equipment--in a plant profile and detailed reports on Phase I and Phase II.

Other Canadian mining projects include Nouveau Monde Graphite Incorporated's Matawinie Graphite Mine in Saint-Michel-Des-Saints, Quebec, which broke ground in May. Nouveau Monde is expanding the 2.34 million-ton-per-year facility by what the company estimates will be another 106,000 tons per year, with ABB is building a 120-kilovolt (kV) substation. Subscribers can learn more from a plant profile and a detailed project report.

"What we're building is a fully integrated graphite to anode material business in Quebec," said Marc Jasmin, the Director of Investor Relations for Nouveau Monde Graphite, in a recent conference call with investors. "The overall market for graphite is about 1.2 million tons per year as we speak, and it's about split 50% anode material, 30% with refractory bricks, and about 20% for higher margin specialty products." For more information on the development, see Industrial Info Resources' May 21, 2026, article - Canada Breaks Ground on Graphite Mine in Quebec.

He later added: "There is only one producing mine as we speak in the whole G7: It's Northern Graphite's Lac des Îles mine, which is known to be end of life, high strip ratio, high cost." Subscribers can learn more about the older operation in a detailed plant profile.

By the Numbers
  • More than US$14 billion: Total investment value of projects in the U.S. and Canada with ABB as a contractor
  • 87%: How much of Phase I of BHP's Jansen project, which features ABB's services, is complete
  • US$9.7 billion: ABB's total revenues for the third quarter, a 14.25% increase from third-quarter 2025

Doing its Own Thing in the U.S.

"In the third quarter, we continued to see a strong market, with orders once again reaching just above US$12 billion," said Morten Wierod, the chief executive officer of ABB, in an earnings-related conference call Tuesday. "I would say that we performed well in a vibrant market. When it comes to our operational performance, we progressed more or less as planned and guided for--a good, mid-teens revenue growth."

ABB's revenues for the third quarter totaled US$9.7 billion, a 14.25% increase from third-quarter 2025. Net income was reported to be US$1.18 billion, a 2.24% decrease.

In the U.S., ABB is developing its own projects in the Industrial Manufacturing Industry, either as full owner or as part of a joint venture. In partnership with Topsoe A/S, the company started construction earlier this year on the Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells Plant in Chester, Virginia, which will produce fuel cells capable of making hydrogen through the electrolysis of water.

While the market for "green" hydrogen has struggled in the U.S., ABB and Topsoe believe their venture will be able to produce these fuel cells at a faster pace and a lower cost than those currently available. It already has locked in support from the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. Subscribers can learn more from a plant profile and a detailed project report.

ABB also is preparing to move its electrical conductor plant in Selmer, Tennessee, to a new location less than a mile away, in Selmer's McNairy Industrial Park. Total space is expected to grow from 232,500 to 320,000 square feet, to meet growing demand from data centers, utilities and other businesses. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the new facility and the ongoing closure of the existing facility.
