Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--U.S. pharmaceutical major Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:ABT) (Abbott, Park, Illinois) has committed to investing 440 million euro (US$448 million) to grow its Irish operations.
The company, which has been operating in Ireland since 1946, will build a new 250,000-square-foot state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at the IDA Business and Technology Park in Loughboy, Kilkenny, to substantially increase production of its FreeStyle Libre technology for people with diabetes. It will also expand the workforce at its operation in Donegal, the worldwide production center for the FreeStyle and FreeStyle Lite brands of blood glucose test strips, which are used in conjunction with FreeStyle blood glucose monitoring meters. It will be looking to fill positions in engineering, quality control, medical device manufacturing and other science-based areas. In 2018, Industrial Info reported that the company was adding an additional 500 jobs in Donegal. For additional information, see August 27, 2018, article - Ireland Welcomes Abbott Investment in Plant Expansion.
Ireland's Taoiseach Micheál Martin welcomed the investment: "This new investment by Abbott in Donegal and Kilkenny is hugely welcome news, bringing up to 1,000 highly skilled jobs and expanded Medtech manufacturing capacity. Abbott has a long and successful history, first establishing operations in Ireland in 1946, and this new investment is a great vote of confidence in the workforce here, and in this country as a place to invest."
Abbott already employs around 5,000 people in Ireland. It said the decision to expand was down to the rapid growth of the product, which it said is used by more than 4 million people globally. "Freestyle Libre is the number one product in the world for continuous monitoring and it continues to grow very quickly," Jared Watkin, Abbott's senior vice president, diabetes care, told The Irish Times. "Clearly we need to keep up with that demand from a capacity and manufacturing investment perspective. "We work well with the IDA and they were instrumental in finding a suitable site for us here in Kilkenny. And we have had an outstanding experience with the Irish workforce...which means it is a sensible strategic investment for us to keep going back there."
