Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--AES Dominicana (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and Corporation Dominicana de Empresas Estatales (CDEEE) (Santo Domingo) have formed a public-private partnership to build and operate the expansion project for the coal-fired Itabo III power station.
The Itabo III project will be located next to existing infrastructure at the Itabo complex. It will involve an estimated investment of $800 million.
The expansion will consist of a coal-fired, circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler to produce steam to drive a 300-megawatt (MW) steam-turbine generator set, with balance-of-plant equipment to supply base-load energy for the local grid. The project is intended to reduce the Dominican Republic's reliance on oil for power generation.
As electricity demand increases, the Dominican Republic recognizes the need to invest in alternative power sources. The country's electricity system currently is powered mostly by imported oil and gas. The country is plagued by continuing blackouts, electricity theft, and high bills for consumers.
The project will create about 300 jobs during the peak construction phase, and about 20 to 25 permanent positions when it is completed. Local workers will have an opportunity to receive training to operate and maintain the facility.
Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-2015. The power station is scheduled to begin full operations in early 2019.
