AEP Plans $700 Million Scrubber Project at West Virginia Coal-Fired Power Plant

To comply with the Environmental Protection Agency regulations, American Electric Power (NYSE:AEP) (Columbus, Ohio), plans to spend an estimated $700 million to construct a flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wet scrubber at its John E. Amos Power Station in Winfield, West Virginia. Mechanical construction is scheduled to start on the first unit in the spring of 2006, with project completion targeted for the late fall of 2008.
AEP has awarded Babcock & Wilcox, Incorporated (Barberton, Ohio), a subsidiary of McDermott International, Incorporated (NYSE:MDR ) (Houston, Texas), the general contractor package for the Amos project. Babcock & Wilcox is also involved with AEPs wet scrubber project at the companys 615 MW Unit #5 at the Muskingum River Power Station (Waterford, Ohio).
AEP is involved with emissions projects at its other coal-fired stations, as well. Alstom Power, Incorporated (Knoxville, Tennessee) received the scrubber contract for the 1,364 MW Mountaineer Power Station (New Haven, West Virginia). The Mitchell and Kammer Power Stations, both located in Moundsville, West Virginia, also have scrubbers and SCRs scheduled for completion by the end of 2009.
