Alstom Wins 1,250 MW Power Contract for Sudan Hydro Dam

In June 2003, the main construction contract for the $2 billion project was awarded to China's CCMD group (industrailinfo.com June 6, 2003 - Sudan Takes Slice of Nile Power with $2 Billion 1250 MW Hydro Dam. At the time of signing, it was the biggest international construction contract ever awarded to Chinese companies.
Work is due to start on the project by the end of 2003. When the 10 kilometer wide and 65 meter high dam is completed and the total 1250 MW turbine installation is commissioned by 2009, it will more than double the country's current power capacity with potential demand estimated at 3,000 MW.
Alstom, in the middle of a make or break recovery plan, is taking encouragement from the contract award. Work on the turbine-generator sets will be spread through various Alstom plants, including those in Brazil, Switzerland, France and Germany.
