AMEC to Complete Dominion's Scrubber Project at Virginia Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Work is under way on the last flue-gas desulfurization scrubber project at the Chesterfield Power Station (Chester, Virginia) owned by Dominion Virginia Power, a subsidiary of Dominion Resources Incorporated (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia).

The Chesterfield complex includes four coal-fired units with a total capacity of 1,351 megawatts (MW). The first unit became operational in 1952, and the last unit (Unit 6), which is also the largest, came online in 1969. A 458-MW gas-fired combined-cycle unit that came online in 1990 is also located on the same site.

The 693-MW Unit 6 has a General Electric (NYSE:GE) steam turbine/generator and an Alstom CE boiler. The unit had a wet scrubber and baghouse installed in the spring of 2008. Shaw Stone & Webster Engineering Corporation (Englewood, Colorado), a subsidiary of The Shaw Group Incorporated (NYSE:SGR) (Baton Rouge, Louisiana), was the contractor for the scrubber. Alstom (EPA:ALO) (Levallois-Perret, France) constructed the baghouse.

A common wet scrubber will be installed to serve units 3, 4 and 5. The Atlanta, Georgia, office of AMEC plc (LON:AMEC) (London, United Kingdom) was selected to provide construction services, and CH2M Hill Companies Limited (Englewood) provided engineering. Completion and tie-in is scheduled for the spring of 2012. No baghouses are planned to be installed on these smaller units at this time.
