Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--American Municipal Power Incorporated's (AMP) (Columbus, Ohio) 35-megawatt (MW) Willow Island hydroelectric facility, located in Pleasant County, West Virginia, began commercial operations this month.
The new facility, located next to the existing Corps Willow Island Locks and Dam, will use two horizontal bulb-type turbines to generate renewable power for the surrounding region. The project had a total investment value of $300 million.
Ruhlin Construction (Sharon Center, Ohio) managed the construction. The project employed up to 400 construction workers at its peak and created nine permanent operating positions. Montgomery Watson Harza (MWH) was responsible for the design and engineering for the project, which took about five years to build. AMP will operate and maintain the facility.
