Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Argentina and Uruguay took a step forward in negotiations to construct a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal that would supply both countries. In Montevideo on June 2, Argentinean Federal Planning Minister Julio Miguel de Vido signed a protocol of construction for the regasification plant in Punta Sayago (Montevideo, Uruguay).
A joint venture company will be formed for the construction of the LNG plant by Enarsa (Buenos Aires, Argentina), which will hold 50%; Uruguayan state Usinas y Transmisiones Eléctricas (UTE), which will hold 25%; and Uruguayan National Administration of Fuel, Alcohol and Portland, which will hold 25%.
The plant will have a regasification capacity of 20 million cubic meters per day. The investment may reach an estimated cost of $400 million if the plant is constructed. On June 4, Argentine President Cristina Fernandez will visit Uruguay, and this and other related energy topics will be discussed.
Other bilateral projects are the regasification plant in Bahia Blanca (Argentina), undertaken by Enarsa and the Venezuelan state company PDVSA; and the construction of the Juana Azurduy pipeline, which will increase the capacity of gas transportation between northern Argentina and southern Bolivia. The latter will be linked to the GNEA project, which will provide natural gas to the provinces of Corrientes, Misiones, and Chaco y Santiago del Estero (Argentina) with fluids coming from Bolivia, and will transport 27.7 cubic meters of gas a day.
