Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Arizona is a hot destination in more ways than one as industries flock to the Grand Canyon State to establish new plants. Industrial Info is tracking just shy of $50 billion worth of projects that are under construction in the state, led in large part by two semiconductor fabrication plants being built by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (NYSE:TSM) (TSMC) (Hsinchu, Tawain).

With $11.6 billion in loans and grants received as part of the CHIPS and Science Act passed under the Biden Administration, TSMC made the move to Phoenix, breaking ground on one fabrication building, or fab, in 2021, and another the following the year. Each building will encompass more than 2 million square feet. The first fab is expected to be completed this summer and will start with an initial production 20,000 12-inch semiconductor wafer starts per month, ramping up to approximately 600,000 per year. The fab also will produce 4-nanometer semiconductors for Apple Incorporated's (NASDAQ:AAPL) (Cupertino, California) iPhones and MacBooks. The second fab, slated for a 2027 completion, will manufacture 2- and 3-nanometer semiconductors. Several data centers are going up in the state, primarily around the Phoenix area, where a large part of the population is clustered. Accounting for $1.6 billion in current spending, with even more to come, is Google Incorporated's (Mountain View, California) Project Redhawk. At the moment two of three planned buildings are under construction. Building 1, with two server halls, is expected to be completed this summer, followed by Building 2 next year. A third and final building is plannedfor the complex, but construction for this one may not begin until 2028. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the related project reports.

Most battery energy storage systems (BESS) are associated with solar power or can stand alone, so AES Corporation's (NYSE:AES) (Arlington, Virginia) West Camp Windfarm, which will feature a BESS unit, is something of a rarity. The facility is being constructed near Joseph City, in eastern Arizona, about 80 miles east of Flagstaff. The windfarm will feature 89 turbines, each with a rated capacity of 4.5 megawatts (MW), to provide about 400 MW of power in peak conditions. For times when the wind isn't blowing, an accompanying 250-MW BESS employing lithium-ion battery technology can be deployed. Construction started a couple of months ago, and the West Camp facility is expected to be completed in mid-2027. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Power Project Database can click here for more details on the project.

As BESS units demonstrate, wind and solar produce power intermittently, leaving times of low generation when conditions are not ideal. Fossil fuels don't have this problem and, with quick start times, units can be used to give a boost to a region's energy needs when other forms of power are flagging. The power division of the Salt River Project (Tempe, Arizona) is helping fill these gaps with a natural gas-fired peaking station near Pinal, about 130 miles east of Phoenix. The peaking station will use six 50-MW combustion turbines to supply up to 600 MW of power to the grid in times of high demand. Engineering, procurement and construction company ProEnergy Services (Escondido, California) kicked off work in mid-2024 with expectations to be completed with the project by the summer of 2026. Mining is a well-established sector in Arizona, but there's always room for growth, and South32 Limited (Perth, Australia) is seizing an opportunity about 70 miles south of Tucson by constructing a new underground mine for zinc, lead and silver. Construction began last summer with various companies providing engineering, design and construction services. The mine will include a 12,000-ton-per-day flotation concentrator and is expected to produce 111,000 tons per year of zinc, 138,000 tons per year of lead and 7.3 million ounces per year of silver from 4.3 million tons per year of milled ore feed over a 22-year mine life. The mine is expected to begin operating in 2027. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Metals & Minerals Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.

Despite the current blight of avian flu, Rose Acre Farms Incorporated is building a new chicken farm. The farm will run the gamut of the poultry sector with both a hatchery and egg-processing facility about 10 miles south of Bouse, in the west of the state near the California border. Rose Acre Farms provides not only eggs in the shell, but also liquid eggs and dried egg products. The company offers a variety of white and brown eggs, including cage-free and nutritionally enriched versions. Rose Acre is underway with construction of a 2.2 million-square-foot grassroot facility that will include a layer farm, pullet farm and egg-processing facility to develop its products. Shipping will be aided by a rail spur. Construction kicked off in late 2023 and is expected to be completed toward the end of this year.
