With an estimated investment of $75 million, NuCapital is seeking to expand the power generation of the park to 45 MW. According to preliminary designs, the company will install five 3-MW turbines.
According to the schedule, NuCapital will launch the separate bidding processes to select a turnkey contractor and an equipment supplier in May 2012. Site preparation is expected to begin in October of this year and will take about two years to complete.
NuCapital is also expanding its Playa Kanoa Windfarm, which is north of the city of Willemstad, in the Netherlands Antilles. This park is equipped with 18 turbines, each with a capacity of 0.5 MW each. The expansion will involve the construction of 10 Vestas V90 wind turbines with individual capacities of 3 MW. The project will follow a similar timeline, beginning in October, and take about two years to complete.
The investments made in these windfarms show the interest of the Caribbean countries in including wind technology in their local power generation. It is expected that during 2012, new green technology investments will be generated in this region.
