Researched by IIR News Intelligence (Sugar Land, Texas)--Bangladesh has taken a decisive step toward diversifying its energy mix with significant progress at the 2,400-megawatt (MW) Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. Located in the Pabna district of western Bangladesh, the project comprises two VVER-1200 reactors of 1,200 MW each.
Unit 1 has reached major construction milestones and entered the fuel-loading and commissioning phase, while Unit 2 is in advanced stages of installation and system integration. Developed with significant technical and financial support from Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation of Russia, the project is Bangladesh's first entry into nuclear power generation. Initial electricity generation from Unit 1 is subject to regulatory clearances and testing outcomes. According to Industrial Info Resources data, there are three capital nuclear power projects in Bangladesh, with a total investment value of US$29.2 billion. Subscribers to the Industrial Info Resources Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can view a list of detailed project reports.
The fuel-loading process marks a critical transition from construction to operation. It involves the controlled insertion of enriched uranium fuel assemblies into the reactor core. Following this stage, the plant will undergo a series of tests, including first criticality, low-power testing and grid synchronization, before reaching full commercial operation.
The Rooppur facility uses Generation III+ VVER-1200 technology, and is designed with enhanced passive and active safety systems, including core catchers and double containment structures. These features align with global post-Fukushima nuclear safety benchmarks, improving resilience against extreme external events.
Bangladesh's move into nuclear energy comes as part of its broader strategy to ensure long-term energy security while reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels. The country is targeting about 60 gigawatts (GW) of total installed power capacity by 2041, with nuclear energy expected to play a stable baseload role alongside renewables and conventional sources.
