Summary
Dominion executives expect their upcoming merger with NextEra will create a nuclear-energy powerhouse and position the combined company to better develop its energy-storage solutions amid growing demand for both technologies.Nuclear Titan in the Making?
As Dominion Energy Incorporated prepares to be acquired by NextEra Energy Incorporated, following shareholder approval in September, executives are optimistic the company's slate of projects will continue to develop under new leadership. Industrial Info Resources is tracking more than $95 billion worth of active and proposed projects owned by Dominion.According to Industrial Info Resources data, nearly half of the $95 billion total is attributed to active and proposed developments at Dominion's four operational nuclear plants, which will double NextEra's number of nuclear plants following the acquisition. NextEra's total operational nuclear capacity would double to more than 10 gigawatts (GW), making the combined company the second-largest nuclear power generator in the U.S., behind Constellation Energy.
In a recent earnings-related conference call, Bob Blue, the chief executive officer of Dominion, offered details on the company's latest Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). He said Dominion has "some limited opportunities" to perform upgrades at its nuclear facilities, which would focus on "investments necessary for subsequent license renewal."
Among the upgrades underway are a condenser replacement and a control-system upgrade on Unit 1 at Dominion's North Anna Nuclear Power Station in Mineral, Virginia. Both are part of a broader plan to allow Unit 1 to operate through 2058, an extension from the previous 2038 that was approved in August 2024 by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
Industrial Info Resources offers more information on the North Anna developments in its Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Plant and Project databases, where readers can find details--including construction schedules, investment values and necessary equipment--in a plant profile and detailed reports on the condenser replacement and control-system upgrade.
The merger is expected to close in the second half of 2027.
By the Numbers
- More than $95 billion: Total investment value of active and proposed projects owned by Dominion
- About $47 billion: Total attributed to active and proposed developments at Dominion's four operational nuclear plants
- More than 10 GW: Total operational nuclear power from a combined NextEra-Dominion company
Quadruple the Storage?
Blue said in the earnings call that battery energy-storage system (BESS) projects would be a priority for the newly formed company following the merger. He pointed to energy-storage legislation that Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) signed into law in April, which he said "establishes substantially higher targets for both short- and long-duration storage.""Looking longer term, the proposed combination with NextEra Energy would bring together significant capabilities and experience in energy storage," Blue said. "We believe that positions the combined company exceptionally well to deploy storage at scale, as the technology matures and system needs evolve."
Dominion's projects under development include a 50-MW BESS unit at the Dulles Solar Energy Center, which is designed to generate 100 MW from PV panels. It's stand-alone BESS projects include a proposed Drake Battery Storage Plant in Topping, Virginia, which would store up to 80 MW for the power grid. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Dulles and Drake projects.
Steven Ridge, the chief financial officer of Dominion, said the latest IRP "increases battery [storage capacity] on the system by about four times. For instance, in the 2025 IRP, for 2030 through 2034 battery [capacity] was 850 MW. In the 2026 update, it is 3.3 GW." He also noted that "some of the IRP would be under a PPA [power-purchase agreement] structure."
Dominion, like many other utilities, grows its generation portfolio through a mixture of plants that it owns and operates, plus additional power procured by independent power producers (IPPs).
