Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Belgium is moving ahead with plans to phase out nuclear power in the country by 2025, although more than 50% of its electricity currently comes from nuclear power plants. In order to bridge the gap, Belgium is investing significantly in wind-power generation. However, since renewable energy sources are intermittent in nature, the country needs to have flexible backup energy sources, and they are banking on natural gas as the best solution available.

Belgium plans to add 2.3 gigawatts (GW) of natural-gas fired power generation projects, of which Electrabel, a Belgian energy company, has announced a combined 1.74 GW to be developed at the Vilvoorde and Les Awirs power stations. The company expects to achieve all of the permits needed to develop these projects by fourth-quarter 2021.

Another 870 megawatts will be developed by Eneco Wind at its Manage power station. The project is in its early planning stage, and construction is expected to kick off in August 2022.

Industrial Info is tracking $12.54 billion worth of power generation projects in Belgium, including more than $6 billion in investment attributed to wind, and $5.5 billion for natural-gas generation.
