Big Ox Prepares Nebraska Renewable Energy Facility Start-Up Next Month
Privately held renewable energy producer Big Ox Energy Incorporated (Denmark, Wisconsin) is preparing its new renewable energy facility located in South Sioux City, Nebraska, for start-up next month.
Big Ox eyed the Dakota County area as a prime location for the facility due to its proximity to waste feedstock from major food processors in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. The region is home to a huge Tyson Fresh Meats plant, Beef Products Incorporated, Darling Rendering, Curly's Food, Bimbo Bakeries, Cargill, Interbake Foods, Natural Food and Richardson Milling.
Big Ox process technology relies on waste streams such as municipal solid waste, food industry by-products and manure that is all plentiful in the area. Some 100,000-plus tons per year of waste will be processed at the facility, which will produce renewable bioenergy in the form of biogas, biosolids, bioliquids and pipeline-quality synthetic natural gas.
Construction started on the estimated $35 million plant in March 2015. The groundbreaking ceremony included two special guests in the form of a pair of 2,200-pound oxen geared up and pulling a plow, symbolizing turning dirt to start the project.
The facility is located on a 27-acre site in the Roth Industrial Park. The 70,000-square-foot plant will house the process equipment along with two large outdoor concrete digester tanks. An estimated 1,500 dekatherms of natural gas will be produced daily.
br> The facility was designed by McMahon Group (Neenah, Wisconsin) along with general contractor Miron Construction Company (Neenah, Wisconsin). Once the project is completed, it is expected to create 25 to 30 new jobs for the county.
And new waste streams are on the way with the construction of a $270 million pork processing plant being built by Seaboard Corporation (NYSE:SEB) (Merriam, Kansas) in Sioux City, Iowa, which is expected to be completed by mid-2017.
