Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Power generators in the United States currently have 6,477 megawatts (MW) of operational biomass-fueled power generation. These biomass units are primarily fueled from wood and municipal solid waste. However, several projects are planned featuring animal-waste-fired facilities, fueled from the waste of poultry, cattle and hogs. A number of projects are also planned to convert coal-fired units to biomass-fired.

Fibrowatt LLC (Langhorne, Pennsylvania), a joint venture of Homeland Renewable Energy LLC (Bedford, New Hampshire) (70%) and Energy Power Resources Limited (Woodbridge, England) (30%), is developing projects using a basic blueprint established for projects in the United Kingdom, where biomass projects are flourishing. Fibrowatt has a 55-MW poultry-waste-fired plant in Benson, Minnesota, that has been operational since 2007. Fibrowatt is developing three facilities in North Carolina, two in Arkansas, and one each in Georgia, Maryland and Mississippi. The projects in North Carolina will be built first.

Other major biomass developers include:

  • ADADE Biopower (Chads Ford, Pennsylvania), a joint venture of Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE: DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) and Areva SA (EPA:CEI) (Paris, France).
  • American Renewables LLC (Boston, Massachusetts), a joint venture of Tyr Energy Incorporated (Overland Park, Kansas)--a subsidiary of Itochu Corporation (OTC:ITOCY) (Tokyo, Japan), Energy Management Incorporated (Boston, Massachusetts) and BayCorp Holdings Limited (Portsmouth, New Hampshire).
  • Rollcast Energy Incorporated (Charlotte, North Carolina).
Certain companies, including Ontario Power Generation (Toronto, Ontario), are considering converting existing coal-fired units into biomass-fired units. Because of provincial mandates, Ontario Hydro must convert the coal-fired units to biomass-fired units at the Atikokan generating station (Atikokan, Ontario), Thunder Bay generating station (Thunder Bay, Ontario), Nanticoke generating station (Nanticoke, Ontario) and Lambton generating station (Courtright, Ontario) in order to continue operating the plants beyond 2014.
