Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Power generators in the United States currently have 6,477 megawatts (MW) of operational biomass-fueled power generation. These biomass units are primarily fueled from wood and municipal solid waste. However, several projects are planned featuring animal-waste-fired facilities, fueled from the waste of poultry, cattle and hogs. A number of projects are also planned to convert coal-fired units to biomass-fired.

Fibrowatt has a 55-MW poultry-waste-fired plant in Benson, Minnesota, that has been operational since 2007. Fibrowatt is developing three facilities in North Carolina, two in Arkansas, and one each in Georgia, Maryland and Mississippi. The projects in North Carolina will be built first.
