Blown Transformer Shuts Down Indiana Power Plant

The R M Schahfer power plant, which is owned and operated by Northern Indiana Public Service Company, was forced into an outage on July 10, 2007, due to a blown transformer. The entire plant was shut down and the only unit that was quickly brought online was unit 15. Officials are currently trying to bring the other units online with hopes of being at normal capacity by this weekend.

R M Schahfer is a coal-fired power plant located in Wheatfield, Indiana. This plant has two larger units: unit 14 (540 MW) and unit 15 (556 MW) that were brought online in 1976 and 1979, respectively. Also in 1979, two 90 MW combustion turbines were added. These units only run during times of peak demand. Additional steam turbines, units 17 and 18 (424 MW each), were added in the 1980’s, which gave the plant a grand total of 2,124 megawatts (MW).
