Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The western U.S. is holding its own when it comes to Industrial Manufacturing projects that are under construction, with California, Arizona and Washington taking the top three positions in terms of overall project value. The projects across the nation cover a diverse range of sectors, including transportation, semiconductors and nuclear-related facilities.

California, with more than $50 billion in underway projects, takes the lead thanks mainly to rail transit projects. Chief among these is a grassroot high-speed rail project in the San Francisco area. The CP1 segment will run 32 miles from Madera County to Fresno County and will be the initial operating section of the state's $38 billion high-speed rail project. Trains on the system will be able to achieve speeds of up to 220 miles per hour. Construction on this section kicked off in 2014 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. Bombardier-Salcef-Weitz Consortium (Montreal, Quebec) is the contractor on the project. Semiconductors have become more in-demand than ever, and there has been a shortage on the global market as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains and increased demand for equipment such as laptops and gaming systems. For related information, see January 19, 2021, article - Let the Chips Fall Where They May - Semiconductor Shortage Stymies Automakers. Construction of semiconductor manufacturing plants take years and typically come in cyclical waves as new technologies develop. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (Hsin-chu, Taiwan) is seizing on a stronger market with the construction of a grassroot semiconductor chip manufacturing plant in Phoenix, Arizona. Construction kicked off earlier this year and is expected to be completed in early 2024. The facility will be able to manufacturing 5-nanometer semiconductors. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Over the past 30 years, the share of global semiconductor manufacturing capacity in the U.S. has dropped from 37% to 12%, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association (San Jose, California). However, the Phoenix area could well become a hub of semiconductor manufacturing. AZBigMedia writes, "Thanks to a large existing cluster of industry-leading firms and recent major announcements -- such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's $12 billion and Intel Corporation's (NASDAQ:INTC) (Santa Clara, California) $20 billion chipmaking plants -- the Greater Phoenix metro is poised to become a major player in America's semiconductor manufacturing industry."

Transit projects around the Seattle area propel Washington into third place in terms of the value of underway projects. Among these is the $3.7 billion East Link light rail extension. The project will extend the East Link system to eastern King County--the state's most populous county--by constructing a 14-mile light rail track from downtown Seattle to Mercer Island, Bellevue and the Overlake area of Redmond. Construction began in 2016 and is expected to wrap up in early 2023. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Another semiconductor manufacturing plant gives the edge to Texas, in fourth position by overall project value. Texas Instruments Incorporated (NASDAQ:TXN) (Dallas, Texas) is underway with the expansion of its manufacturing plant for semiconductors and related devices in the Dallas metro city of Richardson "We've selected Richardson for our next [wafer fabrication facility] because of its access to talent, an existing supplier base and multiple airports, as well as operational efficiencies due to the close proximity of the new facility to our existing Richardson factory," Kyle Flessner, senior vice president of Texas Instruments' technology and manufacturing group, said in a news release. The plant is expected to begin production in 2024. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

A series of related projects involving uranium processing moves Tennessee into fifth position for project value. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the facility in Oak Ridge, about 25 miles west of Knoxville, is one of the largest construction projects in the state's history. Engineering, procurement and construction firm Bechtel says the original Y-12 facility was built 75 years ago during the Manhattan Project, and the facilities are dated and deteriorating. The new modern facility will have a design life of at least 50 years. Construction kicked off in 2018 and is expected to be completed in 2025. Rounding out the top 10 states for underway Industrial Manufacturing project value are New York, Florida, Georgia, Maryland and Alabama.
