Cardinal FG Begins Operation of Newest Float Glass Plant
Industrial Info first reported on this project in late 2003. The $130 million project was developed fairly quickly, considering its magnitude.
Released Tuesday, October 17, 2006
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Cardinal FG Company, a subsidiary of management-owned S-Corporation Cardinal Glass Industries, Incorporated (Eden Prairie, Minnesota), has begun operation at the newest float glass plant in North America. The 550,000 square-foot plant in Winlock, Washington, will house a 650-ton per day glass melting furnace and float glass manufacturing line.
This is the second float glass plant Cardinal FG has opened in the last two years. In 2004, the company opened a similar sized plant in Durant, Oklahoma.
The opening of the Winlock plant represents the last project in a surge in spending by glass manufacturers in the U.S. that started in 2003. In September 2005, O-I opened a new $115 million glass container manufacturing plant in Windsor, Colorado, to supply the Coors Brewing Company with glass bottles.
Not counting annual maintenance projects and glass furnace rebuilds, the Winlock project is the last major grassroot glass plant or expansion planned in the U.S. with the exception of a new wine bottle manufacturing plant planned in Kalama, Washington.
