Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Alabama continues to attract major industrial construction projects over rival states to the north. In the spring of 2012, Carpenter Technology Corporation (NYSE:CRS) (Reading, Pennsylvania) began site preparation for a $500 million specialty steel mill that is now under construction in Tanner, Alabama. The company conducted a global site selection process, which included sites near its headquarters and main manufacturing facility in Reading, Pennsylvania. The company had stated that the main reason for locating the new facility in Alabama over other sites included favorable labor resources, utility rates and tax incentives.
Building erection is under way, and the company hopes to begin equipment installation in the spring of 2013 with production start-up during the first quarter of 2014. The mill will make, refine and forge alloy steel for the aerospace industry.
Turner Universal Construction (Huntsville, Alabama) is providing construction management services and Barge, Waggoner, Sumner and Cannon (Nashville, Tennessee) is providing architectural and engineering design services. The project entails more than 540,000 square feet of buildings.
