Chennai Petroleum Corporation Progresses in Refining Market

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) (Chennai, India) has two refineries in India with a combined refining capacity of 210,000 barrels per day (BBL/d).

The major plant is the Manali refinery, which was commissioned in 1969 and is in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The plant has a capacity of 190,000 BBL/d and includes units such as the 56,000-BBL/d Crude 1, the 74,000-BBL/d Crude 2, the 60,000-BBL/d Crude 3, the 20,000-BBL/d FCCU (Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit), and the 36,000-BBL/d DHDS (Diesel Hydro-desulphurization), among others. The second refinery, in Cauvery Basin, was commissioned in 1993 with a capacity of 10,000 BBL/d to process sweet crude; in 2002, the capacity was increased to 20,000 BBL/d.

Today, Chennai Petroleum is producing products like superior kerosene, aviation turbine fuel, high-speed diesel, naphtha, bitumen, LPG, motor spirit, paraffin wax, and fuel oil, among others.

Separately, the company is performing projects at the Manali refinery to upgrade the quality of auto fuels. For the projects, units will be added to the plant such as a 36,000-BBL/d diesel hydrotreater, a 4,000-BBL/d naphtha hydrotreater, a 2,800-BBL/d isomerisation unit and a 21,000-ton-per-year hydrogen unit. They are expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2010.
