China aims to establish a hydrogen supply system based on gray hydrogen and green hydrogen by 2025
Released Thursday, November 17, 2022
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In March, China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the National Energy Administration (NEA) jointly issued the "Medium and Long-Term Plan for the Development of Hydrogen Energy Industry (2021-2035)," which includes the establishment of a hydrogen supply system based on gray hydrogen and green hydrogen by 2025.
Gray hydrogen is created from coal, natural gas, or methane, using steam methane reformation, but without capturing the greenhouse gases made in the process. Green hydrogen is generated by renewable energy or from low-carbon power.
The plan predicts that the market size of gray hydrogen will reach its peak around 2025; then it will gradually lose the market due to the reduction of green hydrogen costs and the decline of steel production. After 2030, green hydrogen production will gradually achieve parity compared to gray hydrogen, and the latter will no longer have a cost advantage.
Industrial Info is tracking 107 hydrogen projects in China, valued at US$8.61 billion. Among these, 19 are green hydrogen projects and the rest are for gray hydrogen.
