Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--CITIC Pacific Mining Management Pty Limited (Perth, Australia) is preparing to perform the first A-class borescope maintenance on one of the gas turbines at the Sino Iron Power Station in April 2014. The station consists of seven 47-megawatt (MW), Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) SGT-800 combustion turbines, three steam turbines and associated heat-recovery steam generators (HRSG).

The $8 billion Sino Iron Project recently commenced operations in December 2013, after facing multiple technical and operational issues. The multibillion-dollar project is located in the Cape Preston Port industrial zone in Western Australia's Pilbara Region. It involved the construction of an open-pit iron ore mine, natural gas-fired power plant, and a desalination plant.

The iron mine and pellet plant is capable of producing approximately 21 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate and 6 million tonnes of iron ore pellets through its concentrator and pellet plant. The electricity to the mine is supplied by the 450-MW power plant, while the process water to the mine is provided by the 51-gigalitre desalination facility, using the reverse osmosis technology.

In December 2013, Siemens Energy Limited (Victoria, Australia) signed a 10-year, long-term service agreement with CITIC to provide parts, services and upgrades for all seven gas turbines, including preventative maintenance, remote monitoring, parts supply and field service.

CITIC has confirmed that it will perform a minor seven- to 10-day, A-class inspection on the first of the seven gas turbines in the second quarter of the year. According to the agreement, Siemens will do the maintenance work on the gas turbines, while most of the remaining work will be handled by the CITIC maintenance team. There will be similar maintenance on all the other units following the completion of the first outage, based on the run-time hour.
