Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Con Edison Energy, the non-regulated arm of Consolidated Edison Incorporated (NYSE:ED) (New York City, New York), has completed construction and start-up testing for the $275 Million repowering project at the East River Power Station in Manhattan, New York.
The repowering of Con Edisons East River generating station has been undertaken to enhance an already environmentally beneficial steam system, and is capable of producing 5.4 million pounds of steam per hour. Steam is used for heating, hot water, and in some buildings is used to power air conditioning chillers. The use of steam-powered chillers reduces the load on the electric system during times of peak summer demand.
Construction for the project began in March 2002 and was completed in December 2004. The Washington Group International, based in Princeton, New Jersey, provided the turn-key services for the project.
