Researched by IIR News Intelligence (Sugar Land, Texas)--India is vigorously expanding its natural gas infrastructure to reach a 35,000-kilometer (km) pipeline network target, signaling a transformative push toward logistics stability and broader access to cleaner fuel nationwide. This expansion marks a critical milestone in completing the National Gas Grid and guaranteeing uniform natural gas availability across all regions. According to Industrial Info Resources data, there are 64 active capital natural gas pipeline projects in India with a total investment value of US$10.6 billion.
The centerpiece of this expansion is the Indradhanush Gas Grid in Northeast India, operated by Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited; a joint venture of IOCL, GAIL, ONGC, OIL, and NRL spanning 1,670 km across three phases connecting the eight northeastern states to the national gas network, with construction actively underway but facing delays beyond the original 2025 target. The multi-million-dollar project expected to be fully operational by 2028, allowing seamless gas flow and integration with national supplies for industries, power, and households.
Furthermore, the pipeline expansion plan establishes City Gas Distribution networks across the country. This infrastructure development supports India's strategic goal of increasing natural gas' share in the energy basket from 7% to 15% per Hydrocarbon Vision 2030, enabling efficient energy transport across supply and demand centers. Industrial Info Resources offers more information on the North East Gas Grid (NEGG) Project expansion in its Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Oil & Gas Pipeline Project Database, where readers can find details--including construction schedules, investment values and necessary equipment--in the project reports.
. Additionally, there is a transformative initiative to develop liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) pipeline infrastructure, marking a major stride toward eliminating the bulk movement of cooking fuel, connecting ports and refineries with bottling plants efficiently to support India's crucial LPG consumption in cooking and commercial end use. These pipelines will also act as storage at times of need and address supply security crises in the country, according to India's pipeline regulator, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), highlighting their dual role in both routine distribution and emergency response.
The PNGRB is moving ahead with four grassroot pipeline projects with a total length of approximately 2,500 km. The four proposed pipelines include the Cherlapally-Nagpur Pipeline, Shikrapur-Hubli-Goa Pipeline, Paradip-Raipur Pipeline and Jhansi-Sitarganj Pipeline, which will connect key supply sources including refineries and import terminals with LPG bottling plants across multiple regions to ensure seamless evacuation and distribution of LPG. The pipeline project reports can be viewed here.
The pipeline extension plan to connect major demand and supply centers will help to create a strong gas infrastructure foundation that will fuel economic growth and enhance energy security nationwide.
