Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Egyptian power producer West Delta Electricity Production Company (Alexandria, Egypt) began construction to add a 750-megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired combined-cycle unit to Sidi Krir power station, located approximately 30 kilometers west of Alexandria. The contract calls for two gas turbines, two heat-recovery steam generators, one steam turbine and three generators. One of Japan's leading manufacturers, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Limited (MHI) (TYO:7011) (Tokyo, Japan) and its sister company Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MEC) (TYO:6503) (Tokyo) were awarded the construction contract. Power Generation Engineering and Services Company (PGESCo) (Cairo, Egypt) will be responsible for coordinating and engineering the project. The total estimated cost of this unit addition is around $500 million.
The unit will consist of two 265-MW Mitsubishi-M701F combustion turbines with heat-recovery steam generators driving one 220-MW steam turbine generator set in a combined-cycle configuration for a total of 750MW of generating capacity. The Takasago Machinery Works Plant, owned by MHI, will be responsible for supplying, installing and coordinating the gas turbines, and MEC will provide the generators. The increase in power generation capacity will help meet rising electricity demands that are increasing in Egypt's developing economy.
The power station is expected to be commissioned and fully operational by the third quarter of 2009. Industrial Info will continue to monitor this project as it goes through its various stages of construction and development.
