Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--Construction has begun on the $361 million Boco Rock windfarm, in the Snowy Mountains of Nimmitabel, New South Wales. The first sod was turned in the presence of key members of the Nimmitabel Community. The project is being built as a partnership between Thai-listed Electricity Generating Public Company Limited (EGCO) and Wind Prospect CWP (South Australia), a joint venture between Downer EDI (New South Wales) and GE Australia (NYSE:GE) (New South Wales).

Officials said that foundation work began in early August, after permits were finalized and contracts were signed. Road-clearing also commenced in August, and completion is expected by the end of October. Civil site work will continue until the end of the year, while mechanical construction and turbine erection is not expected to begin until May 2014.

The Boco Rock windfarm will use 67 GE wind turbine generators--58 with capacities of 1.7 megawatts (MW) and nine with capacities of 1.6 MW--to supply 113 MW of renewable energy to the grid. Wind Prospect CWP has chosen GE as a technology provider to supply the turbines.

In June 2013, Wind Prospect selected Downer Group Limited (New South Wales, Australia) as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor. The schedule gives a construction time frame of 16 to 18 months from the start of the civil and site preparations.

The project includes the construction of a 25-kilometre (km) transmission line, connecting the windfarm to an existing line that is owned by Country Energy. Construction of the transmission line is planned to commence in December 2013.

Wind Prospect CWP is a Joint Venture between Wind Prospect Group (WP) and Continental Wind Partners (CWP), both international windfarm development companies. EGCO took over full ownership in the project from CWP in June 2013, but CWP will be the local manager and will operate, build and maintain the windfarm on behalf of EGCO.
