Construction of Two Large Hydropower Stations Begins on Yalong River
Construction of the 2,400-megawatt Guandi Hydropower Station and the 600-MW Tongzilin Hydropower Station on the Yalong River began in China's Sichuan province on October 20, 2010.
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Construction of the 2,400-megawatt (MW) Guandi Hydropower Station and the 600-MW Tongzilin Hydropower Station on the Yalong River began in China's Sichuan province on October 20, 2010. The two large hydropower stations mark a milestone in the continuing implementation of the "Western Development Strategy," as cascade projects on the downstream of Yalong River are now fully launched, bringing China another step closer to a low-carbon-emission energy era. China is accelerating the development of its hydropower resources, and installed capacity of hydropower in China is expected to reach 380 gigawatts by 2020. The Guandi and Tongzilin stations are in the Liangshan prefecture and the city of Panzihua in the Sichuan province, respectively. According to the schedule, the Guandi Hydropower Station will begin operations in June 2016, with an annual output of 11.78 billion kilowatt-hours, and Tongzilin Hydropower Station will begin operations in July 2013, with an annual out of 2.98 billion kilowatt-hours. Total investment in the two projects will be about $2.33 billion and $934 million, respectively.
Both projects will be developed by the same company, Ertan Hydropower Development Company Limited (EHDC) (Chengdu, Sichuan), a joint venture of SIDC Huajing Power Holding Company Limited (Beijing) (SHA:600886), which holds 52% and is the listed flagship of State Investment and Development Corporation (Beijing), and Sichuan Chuantou Energy Company Limited (Chengdu, Sichuan) (SHA:600674), which holds 48% and is the listed flagship of Sichuan Provincial Investment Group Company Limited (Chengdu).
Yalong River is one of 13 large hydropower bases in China. Guandi and Tongzilin are two critical projects for hydropower development on the Yalong River, as they will promote stronger western-to-eastern transmission of power, as well as social and economic development in the local areas, according to the introduction of Chen Yunhua, the general manager of EHDC.
