Construction Under Way on $490 Million, 750-Megawatt Gas-Fired Power Station in Egypt

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Egyptian power producer Middle Delta Electricity Production Company (Talkha, Egypt) has begun construction on a 750-megawatt (MW) natural-gas-fired combined-cycle power station in the town of El Atf about 60 kilometers west of Alexandria, Egypt. The project calls for two gas turbines, one steam turbine, three generators and two heat-recovery steam generators. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Limited (TYO:7011) (Minato, Tokyo), one of Japan's leading power-equipment manufacturers, and its sister company Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (TYO:6503) (Chiyoda, Tokyo) were awarded the construction contract. Power Generation Engineering and Services Company (Cairo, Egypt) will be responsible for coordinating and engineering the project. The estimated cost of the project is $490 million.

Construction will consist of two 265-MW Mitsubishi M701F combustion turbines that will each have a heat-recovery steam generator driving a single 220-MW steam turbine generator set in a combined-cycle configuration for a total of 750 MW of generation capacity. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' Takasago Machinery Works will be responsible for supplying, installing and coordinating the gas turbines, and Mitsubishi Electric will provide the generators. The increase in power generation capacity in this region will help meet the rising electricity demands that are contributing to the economic growth of Egypt.

The power station is expected to be commissioned and fully operational by the third quarter of 2009.
