Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) - Andritz Hydro (Hammerfest, Norway) has secured a contract worth approximately 40 million ($55.2 million) to supply two turbines to the new Lysebotn II hydropower station in Norway's Forsand municipality.
The firm has been contracted by utility company Lyse Produksjon AS to supply all the electromechanical equipment for the Lysebotn II project, which will be commissioned in spring 2018.
It will supply two high-pressure Francis turbines rated at 185 megawatts (MW) each, two generator units, hydraulic steelwork and steel linings. Andritz said that the "favourable reservoir situation" means the generating units for this underground hydropower station are "designed for frequent start/stop to optimise energy production".
Lysebotn II, which will have a total generating capacity of 370 MW, will replace the existing Lysebotn hydropower plant, which has a total capacity of 210 MW and an annual generation of 1,242 gigawatt hours (GWh). It was commissioned in 1953, but was later expanded in a second building phase in 1964. The power plant utilises the water in the Lyse watercourse and Årdals watercourse. The fall height is 628 metres and the capacity of the reservoir is 839.6 GWh. Lysebotn II will use the same reservoirs, but will generate 180 GWh more due to the longer fall height and reduced losses.
"The technological competence of Andritz Hydro to cope with the extremely high head of 665 metres was decisive in the award of this order," the company stated. "Lysebotn II will replace the existing Lysebotn hydropower plant and increase the annual energy production by 14% to reach 1.5 terawatt-hours."
Lyse has 11 wholly-owned hydroelectric power plants, as well as ownership interests in several power plants. It is Norway's sixth largest producer of hydropower.
Norway has the world's largest per capita hydropower production, and is the sixth largest hydropower producer in the world, according to the country's ministry of energy. In a year with normal precipitation, hydropower generation is around 120 terawatt hours (TWh), which can cover approximately 99% of Norway's total power production. In addition to hydropower, Norway has windfarms, coal- and gas-fired power plants.
