Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Copper miners are building out mining and processing capacity for the critical mineral used in solar panels and electric-vehicle (EV) batteries, among other applications. Taseko Mines Limited (Vancouver, Canada) recently updated the progress on its Florence Copper project under construction in Arizona, although the vast majority of copper mining-related projects in the U.S. being tracked by Industrial Info are in the development/permitting stages.

Taseko's Florence Copper project involves converting an operational in-situ mine and pilot solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX/EW) plant to produce 85 million pounds per year of copper cathode over a 22-year mine life. "All activities are advancing on schedule and as of September 30, 2024, the project is approaching 40% complete," the miner said in a press release. "First copper production is still anticipated in the fourth quarter 2025."

Construction began earlier this year, which was focused on earthworks, concrete and wellfield drilling. The installation of structural steel, tanks and process equipment is now underway.

Another copper-mining project underway is attributed to Origin Mining Company LLC, a subsidiary of Waterton Copper (portfolio company of Waterton Global Resource Management (Toronto, Canada): the $600 million restart and modernization of its Mineral Park Copper-Molybdenum-Silver mine in Kingman, Arizona. The project is being performed in two phases, which entail restarting the aboveground open-pit mining operation and then modernizing the shuttered processing plant. The plant is designed to produce 12 million pounds of copper and molybdenum per year as well as 740,000 ounces per of silver. Construction is expected to wrap up by the end of first-quarter 2025. Meanwhile, the highest-valued copper-mining project under construction is Rio Tinto's (NYSE:RIO) (London, England) $1.5 billion Phase II extension and upgrade project at its Bingham Canyon mine in Utah, which would deliver an additional 1 million tons of refined copper by 2032; another $500 million investment is for a mine addition and processing plant upgrades that will help extend the mine's operational life to 2032. In terms of projects well underway, Freeport-McMoRan Incorporated's (NYSE:FCX) (Phoenix, Arizona) $300 million expansion at its Lone Star Mine in Safford, Arizona is expected to fully wrap up around the end of the year. The project entails expanding the crushing facility and handling-and-stacking system for copper oxide ore to increase Lone Star's overall production of copper from 250 million to as much as 300 million pounds per year. The company is increasing the feed rate on the crushing system from 95,000 to as much as 120,000 tons per day, and an initial production capacity of 105,000 tons per day is already operational.
