New Hope for Critical Minerals in Greenland

For a nation that has yet to produce one ounce of critical minerals--according to Global Mining Review--Greenland is a significant place for that kind of investment. Industrial Info Resources data show nine critical minerals mining projects in Greenland, with a total investment value (TIV) of about US$4.07 billion.

A recent independent study of Greenland Mines' Kangerdluarsuuk Sarfartoq Rare Earth Element Mine could add more investment interest. The study by Tetra Tech Canada and GeoSim Services, has found it to have potentially 40,700 tonnes of neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr), dysprosium and terbium. A Greenland source for key metals in permanent magnets for wind turbines, electric vehicles, defense systems and more, development of the mine could be a step in overcoming China's dominance in this area. In an August 2025 story, global think tank GIS Reports stated that the U.S. gets 96% of its rare earths from China.

In fact, Benchmark Minerals says China controls 99% of the world's dysprosium and terbium, either by mining or by processing ores mined elsewhere in the world. So a western source of those and other elements would be welcomed.

What the Evaluation Means

According to Mining Weekly, this independent evaluation means that a portion of the mine's resource is now under a Securities and Exchange Commission reporting standard, reducing investment risks. Greenland Mines is listed in the U.S. on NASDAQ.

With this data there is now a path toward meaningful development, for the first time. In the report is a "combined openpit and underground mineral resource estimate (MRE), unlocking mining-method flexibility that was never previously modelled," said Mining Weekly.

The estimated amount of minerals is roughly equivalent to five years of all NdPr oxide refined outside China in 2025, the story said.

Money Rolling In?

Greenland Mines wasted no time in starting the process of capitalizing on this news. On August 26, it announced a US$20 million public offering involving 4 million shares. The company plans to use the funds raised mainly to further the development of the Sarfartoq project.

August 27 was the offering's expected closing date.

When Will Critical Minerals See Daylight?

It could still require a crystal ball (not made of critical minerals) to foresee the start of production from any Greenland projects, including Sarfartoq. That mine's completion date is tentatively Q4 2031, according to Industrial Info Resources data.

The earliest completion date of Industrial Info Resources' tracked rare earth projects is currently seen as Q2 2029, the $131million Amitsoq underground graphite mine.

Next is the Q2 2030 projected completion date of the $470 million Thule Citronen Zinc-Lead Mine. Other completion dates stretch out past 2035.

Mining Greenland Is Hard

Some believe Greenland will not surrender its minerals lightly--not just because of environmental and political issues, but also from harsh realities.

A February story in Yale University's e360 publication said "...logistical and meteorological challenges, along with Greenlanders' environmental concerns and strict regulations, have so far prevented any rare earth mining development."

Slush avalanches--from combined rain-snow events can threaten people, equipment and roads due to the difficulty of predicting such occurrences. And the permafrost is melting, undermining stability of structures and roads.

Besides that, Greenland is far from any end users, there is little to no infrastructure, and its small population creates hiring issues should mining really ramp up. When its temperatures do reach its historical lows of minus 40°F, operating heavy equipment becomes very difficult, as hydraulic fluids thicken. And high winds ground helicopters and airplanes, while ice keeps ships out of ports.

Because of that, a significant part of development costs will be beyond the mines and processing themselves, with roads, power, coping mechanisms for extreme weather, and other costs figured in. Much of this will be beyond normal costs incurred in developed countries.
