Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--CS Energy Limited (Queensland, Australia) is conducting a planned maintenance outage on a 750-megawatt (MW), coal-fired unit at Kogan Creek Power Plant, which is near Chinchilla in southwest Queensland. The base load power plant is equipped with one 750-MW, air-cooled, condensing steam turbine from Siemens AG (NYSE:SI), with a Siemens generator and a Babcock-Hitachi supercritical water tube boiler at 1,040-degree Fahrenheit temperature. It will run at 3628psi pressure levels.

A major overhaul on the Kogan Creek Unit 1 steam turbine has been underway since early November 2013. The project should take another two weeks to complete, during which maintenance, repairs and inspection will be performed on the turbine's equipment. This will involve generator tests and cleaning, inspections and general maintenance on the boiler, as well as replacement of all major valves on the turbine.

CS Energy performs bi-annual minor outages of the unit every two years, while a major maintenance of the unit is performed every four years. This current outage originally was planned to be a minor one, but has grown in duration and scope as major valves on the turbine needed to be replaced. CS Energy appointed Clyde Babcock Hitachi (Australia) Pty Limited (Queensland) and Alstom Power Australia Pty Limited (New South Wales, Australia) as major contractors to perform this maintenance project.

The next major maintenance on the unit will be performed in August 2015. It will take approximately 30 days.

CS Energy Limited owns and operates the 700-MW Callide A & B and the 840-MW Callide C coal-fired power plants in Biloela, Queensland. Both plants have undergone major upgrades and refurbishments that have extended their operating lives. CS Energy also is operating the Wivenhoe Power Station, a 500-MW, pumped-storage hydroelectric plant that comprises two 250-MW units. Wivenhoe is the only pumped-storage hydroelectric plant in Queensland.
