Data Center and Port Projects Lead Texas to $3.3 Billion in Q3 Manufacturing Kickoffs

Texas is home to a vast industrial landscape, but projects at data centers and cargo ports account for 75% of the total investment value of Industrial Manufacturing Industry projects that Industrial Info expects will kick off in the third quarter in the Lone Star State

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Texas is home to a vast industrial landscape, but projects at data centers and cargo ports account for 75% of the total investment value of Industrial Manufacturing Industry projects that Industrial Info expects will kick off in the third quarter in the Lone Star State.

The data center sector accounts for $1.8 billion of the $3.3 billion worth of projects that are expected to kick off from July through September. Industrial Info is tracking two projects from Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) (Redmond, Washington), both of which are in San Antonio and expected to wrap up next year. The $215 million Phase 1 construction of the SAT15 data center is the initial phase of a 730,000-square-foot development and entails constructing a 245,000-square-foot building, and a $175.9 million expansion of the SAT40 data center involves constructing a 153,230-square-foot building. Page Southerland Page Incorporated (Houston, Texas) is the architect on both projects. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can read detailed reports on the SAT15 and SAT40 projects.

Meanwhile, the $280 million first phase of Stack Infrastructure's (San Jose, California) data center campus in Fort Worth, is expected to kick off in September. The initial phase entails constructing seven 660,000-square-foot buildings across 92 acres, and completion is expected in late 2024; two subsequent phases will add another five buildings of the same size. Two units of Hillwood (Dallas, Texas) are involved in the project: Hillwood Construction Services is the general contractor for the first phase, and Hillwood Development Corporation is serving as the real estate developer for the whole campus. Texas ports are a hub for activity along the U.S. Gulf Coast, so it is no surprise that Industrial Info is tracking related projects--especially at Port Houston. The port is home to the Houston Ship Channel, which is the busiest waterway in the nation, according to the port authority, which cites the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Industrial Info is tracking a major expansion of the channel, also known as Project 11, which includes two project segments that are expected to kick off this summer.

One project (Expansion 3) will widen the existing channel at the Barbours Cut Terminal and modify the channel entrance, among other work, and the other project (Expansion 4) will continue widening and deepening the channel. When complete, Project 11 will widen the 52-mile Houston Ship Channel by 170 feet along its Galveston Bay reach, from 530 feet to 700 feet. It also will deepen some upstream segments to 46.5 feet. Subscribers can read more information on the Expansion 3 and 4 projects.

The Port of Brownsville in south Texas is gearing up for a $302 million improvement project, which involves increasing the depth of the Brazos Island Harbor Channel by dredging the 17-mile long channel to a depth of 52 feet from the current 42 feet, dredging berthing areas, constructing areas for dredged materials, raising levees and adding navigational aids to accommodate larger cargo vessels and to increase the port's capabilities.
