Diverse Fuel Mix at the Forefront as LS Power and Dynegy Move Forward with Development of New Generating Assets

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Private energy producer LS Power Group is moving forward with the development of power assets to meet growing energy demands across the country. The company has more than 12,000 megawatts (MW) of new generation under construction or in the development stages made up of coal, natural gas and wind-fueled plants. In 2007, LS Power and Dynegy Incorporated (NYSE:DYN) (Houston, Texas) finalized a previously announced combination of operating assets and the establishment of a development joint venture.

Together, the companies have commenced construction on two coal-fired plants in Texas and Arkansas. In 2006, construction started on the 680-MW Plum Point Power Plant near Osceola, Arkansas. Construction is expected to be complete during 2008. Later in 2007, construction began on the 900-MW Sandy Creek Power Plant near Riesel, Texas, which is expected to begin operation in 2012. Both projects are being engineered and constructed through a partnership of Black & Veatch (Overland Park, Kansas), Zachry Construction Corporation (San Antonio, Texas), and Gilbert Industrial (Omaha, Nebraska). In addition to these plants, the companies have 5,795 MW more in development. This includes a second 665-MW unit at the Plum Point site as well as new plants proposed in Georgia, Colorado, Iowa, Nevada and the 750-MW Mid-Michigan Plant near Midland.

Apart from new coal-fired generating capacity, LS Power and Dynegy are embarking on the development of new natural-gas-fired plants. In fact there is currently 4,540-MW of natural-gas-fired capacity under development through additions at existing plants and grassroot construction of new power plants. The companies are proposing to construct a 600-MW grassroot plant near Manassas, Virginia; two 1,200-MW plants in Texas; and plants in Arizona and New Jersey. Plans to add new peaking units at the Bridgeport site in Connecticut are also in the works.

Not to be left out of the renewable energy segment, the companies are involved in a partnership to build 200 MW of wind generation in Nevada.
