Duke Energy Begins Construction of $325 Million Expansion Project at Buck Steam Station

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Duke Energy Carolinas LLC, a subsidiary of Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina), has begun construction of the $325 million, 620-megawatt (MW) expansion project at the Buck Steam Station in Salisbury, North Carolina.

Construction for the project began earlier this year. The facility is slated to begin full commercial operation by the summer of 2011. The project will consist of constructing a 2-on-1 combined-cycle power island that will be equipped with two 150-MW natural-gas-fired GE Energy MS7001FA combustion turbines, two Vogt heat-recovery steam generators (HRSG), and a single 320-MW D-11 model steam turbine generator also provided by GE Energy (Atlanta, Georgia), a subsidiary of General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut). The new project will have the capability to utilize fuel oil as a backup fuel source. Once complete, two of the older coal-fired units will be retired, which will help make the facility more efficient and environmentally friendly.

The Shaw Group Incorporated (NYSE:SHAW) (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) will provide the turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction services for the duration of the project.
