Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) reported progress on Thursday on a number of capital investment items, including work on the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, completion of a natural gas-fired, combined cycle power plant in South Carolina and the expected wrap-up of another large power plant project late this year in Florida.

During the 2018 first quarter, "We reached constructive outcomes in several regulatory cases and started construction of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, which will support economic growth in the Southeast," said Chief Executive Officer Lynn Good in a press statement. The $6 billion pipeline will deliver up to 1.5 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of natural gas from the Utica and Marcellus shales to a terminus in Robertson, North Carolina. The project is a joint venture between Duke Energy, Dominion Energy Incorporated (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia), Piedmont Natural Gas Company (NYSE:PNY) (Charlotte, North Carolina) and Southern Company (NYSE:SO) (Atlanta, Georgia).

The pipeline project completed 200 miles of tree felling through March, and construction on compressor stations in West Virginia and North Carolina is underway, Duke Energy reported. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has been asked to approve full construction on the mainline in West Virginia. The pipeline is expected to be in service by fourth-quarter 2019.

Duke Energy reported that it's W.S. Lee combined cycle, natural-gas fired power plant in Belton, South Carolina, went into service on April 5. For more information on the 750-megawatt plant, see Industrial Info's project report.

Work also continues on the 1,640-MW Citrus County combined-cycle plant in Florida, which is on track for completion by the end of the year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In late February, the North Carolina Utilities Commission issued an order approving new rates associated with Duke Energy's $8.1 billion rate base, including its investments in gas-fired generation in the state, Lynn said during the company's first-quarter earnings conference call.

The $31 million Sutton Power Plant Coal Ash Landfill project in Wilmington, North Carolina involves plans to relocate ash to the former Brickhaven Clay Mine, followed by reclamation and backfill at the existing sites. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

The $650 project at the Asheville Power Station in Arden, North Carolina, entails constructing a 560-MW combined-cycle unit. Construction began in the fourth quarter of last year and is expected to take about two years to complete.
