East Kentucky Power Cooperative Starts Up Unit 4 at Kentucky Station

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The H.L. Spurlock Power Station in Maysville, Kentucky, began commercial operation of Unit 4 at the end of 2008. This is a base-load unit, which consists of an Alstom (EPA:ALO) (Levallois-Perret, France) circulating fluidized bed boiler and a General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) steam turbine, with a total capacity of 278 megawatts (MW).

The plant is now a 1,359-MW station. It is owned and operated by the East Kentucky Power Cooperative and is the largest plant in the East Kentucky fleet. Unit 1 went commercial in September 1977, the second unit went online in March 1981, and the third unit went online in April 2005. The fourth unit was added to help generate electricity for the cooperative's 16-member cooperatives and can power roughly 30 cities the size of Maysville. The group serves about 1 million Kentuckians across 89 counties.
