Ecopetrol Proceeds with Modernization Project at Barrancabermeja Refinery

Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Ecopetrol (Bogota, Colombia) is proceeding with the second phase of the modernization project at its 247,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Barrancabermeja Refinery in the state of Santander, Colombia.

The modernization project is scheduled in two phases. The first one, which began in 2008 and was completed between April and May 2010, included the construction of units such as a diesel hydrotreater, a gasoline hydrotreater, a sulfur recovery unit, a sour water stripper, a tail-gas treater, and the hydrogen and amine units.

The second phase will increase the refinery capacity up to 350,000 BBL/d and includes the addition of a 100,000-BBL/d crude unit, a 54,000-BBL/d delayed coker, a 30,000-BBL/d coker naphtha hydrotreater and a 50,000-BBL/d hydrocracker. During this year, Ecopetrol and Foster Wheeler USA, which is the project management consultant, will select the engineering, procurement and construction company. The construction is expected to begin by mid-2012 and will take two years to complete.
