Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Companhia de Geracao Termica de Energia Eletrica (CGTEE) (Porto Alegre, Brazil), a subsidiary of Brazilian power holding company Eletrobras, is on budget and on schedule with the Phase C expansion project at the coal-fired Candiota power plant, also known as the Presidente Medici power plant. In May 2008, the company's engineers traveled to China's CITIC International Contracting Incorporated (Beijing) to inspect the Candiota plant's new equipment. The turbine and generator inspected included balance tests, over-velocity rotor tests and booster-bombs performance, among other things.
The Chinese company is responsible for the project's engineering, procurement and construction services and will supply all of the equipment. The estimated $400 million project will add a further 350 megawatts (MW) to the power plant.
The Candiota plant was built in three phases. Phase A consisted of two 63 MW Franco Tosi (Milan, Italy) steam turbines, which started operation in 1974; Phase B consisted of two 160 MW Alstom (Paris) steam turbines, which began operation in 1986. Phase C is expected to become operational in December 2010. The coal-fired plant is also known as Presidente Medici Power Plant. CGTEE also owns two power plants in southern Brazil: 20 MW UTE Sao Jeronimo and 24 MW UTE Nutepa, apart from to the Candiota power station.
