ExxonMobil to Close Steam Cracker in Singapore by June
Southeast Asia's ethylene cracker plants are undergoing a major shift, with several plants either facing delayed start-up, extended shutdowns or closure.
The Philippines' JG Summit Petrochemical Complex was shut down indefinitely in January, and Exxon Mobil Corporation (Spring, Texas) expects the older steam cracker at its Singapore Chemical Plant (SCP) to shut down permanently by June 2026. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Chemical Processing Plant Database can read detailed profiles of the JG Summit and Singapore facilities.
ExxonMobil's older steam cracker, which has a 900,000-ton-per-year ethylene capacity, was built in 2002. Its second, 1.1 million-ton-per-year steam cracker will continue to operate alongside its refinery and downstream units.
The global petrochemical overcapacity crisis is seen as the primary reason for these closures. China's aggressive capacity expansions, including 60% of the world's new ethylene units and 70% of global new olefin and aromatics units, have led to a supply-and-demand imbalance that is altering the petrochemical landscape.
