First 1,000-Megawatt Coal-Fired Unit in Central China Begins Operating

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Unit 1 of Luyang Power Plant, the first 1,000-megawatt (MW) coal-fired unit in Central China, passed the 168-hour trial operation and was put into commercial operation in Henan province recently, according to an announcement of Central China Branch Company of the State Grid Corporation of China (Wuhan, Hubei) made on November 26, 2010.

Luyang Power Plant is a pit-head power plant developed by China Power Investment Corporation (Beijing). Located in Lushan County in Central China's Henan province, the plant has a total planned capacity of 6,000 MW.

Construction of two 1,000-MW units in Phase I began in May 2008. According to the schedule, the second unit is expected to begin operations in December this year. Both units will be connected to the 500-kilovolt (kV) Xiangshan Substation via the 500-kV Lushan-Xiangshan transmission lines.

To ensure the safety of the unit, the Central China Branch Company actively participated in the preparation of the unit prior to commercial operations, and approved the safety control system for the grid connection of the power plant.

The successful commissioning of the 1,000-MW unit in will take advantage of local coal resources to produce electricity. The plant will not only promote the concentrated development of large-scale power plants in Central China, but also will push the Central China Power Grid into a new era, featuring large power plants and large generating units.
