Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--AES Corporation (NYSE:AES) (Arlington County, Virginia) announced yesterday the first phase of the two-phase Chevelon Butte Windfarm near Winslow, Arizona, the state's largest wind project, has started commercial operations. Industrial Info is tracking related project reports, and nearly $61 billion worth of renewable generation-related projects in Arizona--including $14.1 billion that fall within Industrial Info's assessment of having a high or medium probability (70-99%) of moving forward as planned.

Chevelon Butte is expected to generate a total of 454 megawatts (MW) of wind energy once both phases are fully operational next year. The 238-MW, $590 million first phase wrapped up in April, while the 216-MW, $260 million second phase is expected to kick off in October. Both phases utilize wind turbines provided by Vestas Wind Systems A/S (Aarhus, Denmark). In 2022, 99% of Arizona's total net generation came from six sources, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), including solar power (10%), hydroelectricity (5%) and wind (1%). While those three sources do not make up a large percentage of the energy mix, the EIA notes the state "ranks second in the national in solar energy potential."

174 Power Global Corporation (Irvine, California), a unit of a Hanwha Group (Seoul), expects construction of a 1-gigawatt (GW), $1.25 billion solar farm and 1-GW, $1.25 billion battery energy storage system (BESS) near La Paz, will begin later this month. The facility would use approximately 2 million Hanwha Q Cells (Seoul) photovoltaic (PV) panels installed on a single-axis tracker system. The project is expected to wrap up in 2025. Subscribers can read more information on the solar and BESS projects.

Among the other solar projects that are in the development stages in Arizona are Invenergy's (Chicago, Illinois) 400-MW, proposed $440 million Hashknife Solar Plant, east of Flagstaff, and renewable developer Brightnight, LLC's (Inlet Beach, Florida) 300-MW, proposed $350 million Box Canyon Solar plant, southeast of Phoenix. The projects are expected to wrap up in late 2024 and 2025, respectively. Subscribers can read reports on the Hashknife and Box Canyon projects.

In terms of projects under construction, Clenera Renewable Energy (Boise, Idaho) is at work on the $480 million CO Bar Solar Farm in Flagstaff, in Coconino County, which is expected to wrap up in late 2024 and provide 480 MW of solar generation. Click here for the project report.

Another Arizona windfarm being tracked by Industrial Info is BluEarth Incorporated's (Calgary, Alberta) Papermill Windfarm in Overgaard, in Navajo County. The project would utilize 116 3.45-MW wind turbines to generate 400 MW of power. Construction is planned to begin next year. Click here for the project report.
